Synectics 19rTT Capacitive Touchscreen

Details
Synectics is a company that is known for producing medical and security grade surveillance equipment. Although it is difficult for the average individual to get their hands on one of their monitors, one may successfully find one by looking into business closure sales.

The Synectics 19rTT capacitive touchscreen is a 19" monitor with almost all of the connectivity for which one could hope. It has HDMI, DVI, BNC, and Component video inputs. It also has an analogue audio input so that the on-board speakers can serve as your pc speakers.

So what does "capacitive" touch screen mean? It means that when you touch the screen you feel glass, rather than easily scratched plastic. It also means that the touch sensitivity of the screen is greater and will last longer than that of a "resistive" touch screen. Many of the older generation touchscreens were of the resistive type. Capacitive touch costs more to manufacture, but is ultimately better for the end user from both function to durability.

Great, so it's a dream when it comes to connectivity. What about the build quality? The 19rTT is a tank. Not only does it weigh in like one, it resembles one! The entire chassis is steel. Not your average thin steel, but borderline plate steel. This unit was built to take some abuse, not that I would recommend that, but it certainly will take more than your average monitor.

The resolution is nothing to write home about. It's native resolution is 1280x1024. Some might think that to be a little light for a 19" monitor, but when one considers that this is a touchscreen, it is actually just right. Any greater resolution and the touchscreen would be hard to use because on-screen buttons become smaller the greater the resolution. It is also ideal for video feedback from CCTV cameras and the such.

As far as the display is concerned, there are no concerns with picture or image quality. Color production is better than average for a touchscreen and the resolution lends itself to making it possible to do anything from browse the internet to edit pictures.

One of the outstanding features of this monitor is that it has an outboard power supply. What does this mean? Well, it means you get a little black box on the back of the monitor that supplies DC voltage to the monitor via a small power plug. Additionally, this means that this monitor will work on any 12vdc power source. Not only is this great for 12 volt power systems, but it means that one could potentially use this in a vehicle with no problem. At the present, most cars that come with a navigation unit built in, come with a 7-10 inch screen as well. I suspect that as with computers in the home, screens will only become larger for vehicle use. An early-adopter may find the 19rTT to be ideal for a custom setup where a large touchscreen fits the bill.

Conclusion
The Synectics 19rTT capacitive touchscreen is a fantastic screen. It is on the expensive end of the spectrum, but it IS designed for the commercial world rather than the average consumer. The average end user will find that this monitor probably has more bells and whistles than required for their particular use, but that is what you get when you get the best.
